  • A Lifetime on Tiptoes

Healing the wounds of Partition with a challenging story for our time
A seminal new play in Panjabi - by Mazhar Tirmazi
Man Mela Theatre Company is pleased to present A Lifetime on Tiptoes by the eminent poet Mazhar Tirmazi to mark the sixtieth year of Partition and to remember the holocaust of 1947. Audiences will have the opportunity to share their own stories of Partition to enable a healing process to take place across the Indian/Pakistani communal divide. Lynk Ray will be previewing this play at Stratford Circus Theatre on 23 June 2007 in the evening. First show will be in Panjabi and the Second show will be in English. Both performances will be part of the Newham Arts Festival. The play will also be used to launch projects coming on stream, subject to funding, involving secondary schools and communities.

  • Voices of Partition

    1947 to 2007
    The Legacy and the Challenge
This project will unite communities from East and West London to capture the heritage stories about the partition from the living treasures that reside within our communities. This inclusive project will also look at partitions that have taken place since 1947 and how these have impacted on communities living in London. Film, CDs and Teachers Resource Pack will be developed to ensure a solid legacy for the next generation. This work will also be available on our websites.

2. 1807- 2007
Bicentennial Commemoration of Abolishing Slavery by Law

  • Commemorating 1807

  • This Newham Project for Primary Schools will aim to increase participation of young people and their families from diverse communities in their ancestral heritage focusing on the abolition of slavery in 1807
  • Sankota Triangle Emancipation Project (Tower Hamlets and Newham Secondary Schools, Lydiard, Daneford Trust).
This project will strengthen positive relationships between young people from diverse communities in commemorating the bi-centennial emancipation from slavery movement. It will chart the history of slavery from West Africa to West Indies and to England. The project will research local stories in East London using local archives and resources.
